Frequently Asked Questions

If you are in business as a writer you will need to register with HMRC by 5th October following the tax year in which your trade commenced. You will then report your income and expenses on your tax return. It may be beneficial to instead incorporate a company to provide your services through. Companies have extra costs but can provide tax and other advantages. Brebners can take you through your options so you can make an informed decision for the long term.

Writers can often claim more expenses than they realise. These may include computer and office costs including writing software, research, travel, editing, advertising, agent commission and a charge for the use of a home office.

You will need to register for VAT should you make taxable supplies of over £90,000 on a rolling 12-month basis, or anticipate invoicing for this amount in the next 30 days. However, certain overseas sales of your work will not count to this total. We can advise on what income counts and whether voluntary registration is in your interests.

Authors can, almost uniquely, often average their income across tax years. Brebners routinely make these claims for our author clients, ensuring tax bands and personal allowances are used efficiently and tax bills are kept as low as possible.

Many types of foreign withheld tax can be avoided or refunded by making filings with the relevant tax authorities overseas. Brebners can assist you in completion and submission of these forms. Where foreign withholding tax cannot be avoided, relief may often be claimed on your UK tax return, subject to the terms of any applicable double taxation treaty and HMRC rules.
