Qualified Profile - Steven Smith
I joined the audit department at Brebners in September 2008 after graduating from the University of Southampton with a degree in Geography and I qualified as a chartered accountant in October 2011.
I applied to Brebners as I wanted to gain a wide range of experience instead of specialising early on in my career. Throughout the course of my training contract I have been given the opportunity to work on a range of assignments stretching from the preparation of small company accounts to assisting with large and international audit assignments.
What makes Brebners different?
Brebners’ clients span a wide range of business sectors including media, software engineering, construction and logistics so every assignment offers you the opportunity to learn something new and to use it to enhance your career.
The firm has a culture that balances hard work with a relaxed and friendly working environment with regular social events arranged to introduce new members of staff to the firm, celebrate exam success and to expose sporting abilities (or lack thereof).
The ACA qualification
I decided to apply for an ACA training contract as it offered me the chance to study for an internationally recognised finance qualification and improve my commercial and business awareness whilst earning a full time salary.
At first studying for the ACA qualification is daunting as you are faced with 15 exams, professional development and ethics courses covering a wide range of subjects that many have not encountered during previous studies. The exams require dedication and the support that is offered to you at Brebners by the partners and your peers proves invaluable.
As a qualified member of staff at Brebners you can expect to take on a great deal of responsibility including direct client liaison, responsibility for juniors’ work and being accountable to the partners - all of which are very rewarding and give you the opportunity to consolidate knowledge gained through the professional and advanced stage examinations and to build upon soft skills.
Coupled with a culture that encourages teamwork and a healthy work/life balance, Brebners can offer you a conducive learning environment to start your career in accountancy. Results are expected from you from day one with greater responsibility given to you throughout your training contract providing you with the skills required to become a chartered accountant.
